The room almost brightens with that cocksure grin of Lucifer's, Matthieu swears by that especially what with the ever rising appreciation for the man's affection as much as confidence. He may be known to be a troublemaker but he cared fiercely and the reaper embraces it. However of course said mischief earns a scoff of a laugh from him.
"Life gives you hellfire, make what? Lemons can be made into lemonade but what about hellfire then?"
He moves about the floor at the lead of Lucifer, adjusting when needed. "Hrm maybe a thing or two. But you're not wrong. Remember the first time I let you though. Don't think my hotel neighbors were very pleased."
Lowering his head, Lucifer presses a gentle kiss to Mattheiu's temple as they sway to the music. Getting to spend time with his reaper like this, so intimately, calms the fire in his veins and soothes him. Mattheiu himself does that, really, and it's a testament to how deeply he's fallen for the man. "I suppose when life gives you hellfire, you give life hell back."
He snickers at his own little joke, swaying with his reaper as the rest of the world disappears. Mattheiu is the only thing important to him now, after all. "I think they were just jealous, darling. Jealous that I'm lucky enough to call you mine."
"Oh ok. Guess I'll have to remember that one," Matthieu chuckles, letting his check rest against Lucifer's shoulder for a moment. There was something to be said about how his luck has a knack for working out in weird ways. Meeting let alone courting the devil takes the cake by far...though really Lucifer was the one doing most of the courting. Especially with such ridiculous musings.
He glances around with a low hum. No one cared as much about who was who dancing which was a relief. "I think it was mostly the loud noises but that was one of them, yes."
"Well, like I said, jealousy," he teases quietly, leaning in to press a gentle kiss to Mattheiu's temple. He can remember the night oh so well, and it's something that he's terribly grateful for. His second chance, the ability to make things right....all of it had coalesced and now he's here, entwined with his reaper and there's nowhere else in all of the worlds he'd rather be. "I love you, deeply, my darling."
He laughs softly at the gentleness of the kiss as much as the tease of jealousy. Maybe he should relent some and accept that he was a source of such frustrations to others. Especially with how wonderful the devil turned out to be as a partner. Charming, considerate...mostly, caring beyond words...
Matthieu however blinks at the next few words. What? Did he hear right? His footwork suffers briefly while his mind scrutinizes and double checks that yes he did hear that. Lucifer loves him. By the gods Lucifer loves him.
He’s left gaping, trying to find his words before just dumbly smiling.
Mattheiu loses his grace for a moment, stepping out of time and it takes Lucifer a moment before he's sure that the man isn't going to trip and fall. Immediately there's a flash of concern that radiates through him, and he's making an attempt to steer them away from the crowd so that he can make sure his reaper is alright.
"Mattheiu, darling?" There's a touch of worry in his voice as he tries to navigate the both of them through the throngs of people, "I didn't think I was that bad a dance partner."
It's a joke, he has to make light of the situation because he's concerned.
"Oh no it's fine. My bad. Just a mild trip up on my part."
His confidence falters at the avid concern that meets him after they retreat from the thick of the dancing. Did he not hear right? There was a chance that something else could've been said. Maybe he should play it safe. No. Matthieu wanted to know for certain perhaps even hear it again if so.
Mouth having gone dry, he swallows before focusing on Lucifer's jacket. "You ugh. Never heard you say that before." He regrets putting it like that. Steeling his nerves, Matthieu glances up at Lucifer. "I love you too."
"Oh." It'd slipped out, but he'd meant it in the truest sense of everything. He did love Mattheiu, deeper than he could express, but it'd never been something that he's been able to put into words. Not that he didn't want to, just that he'd never been sure off the right time to do so.
Apparently this was the time. It had come naturally, after all. "I- I should say it more often then, I think."
His tone is low, amused, "I love you, Mattheiu Durant."
His face falls at the hesitation because maybe he had been wrong and jumped the gun enough that this would be an awkward mess. How fitting that it would happen on the dance floor once more. Ironic beyond a doubt. Still he tries to save face by glancing away and focusing on any others that packed the floor, watching them flit about while he tries to ignore the nagging regret tightening his throat.
He barely catches the next uttering of the words. Pinpricks at the corner of his eyes which gets him to haphazardly wipe one of his eyes on his shoulder. "I ugh yea. I love you, incredibly and undeniably so, Lucifer Morningstar."
Fingers slip beneath Mattheiu's chin, tilting his head up gently so that Lucifer can reach over and wipe away the faint prick of tears that are gathering in his reaper's eyes. There's nothing more to be said between them, anything else would break the spell that's come over everything, and so instead he leans in and tenderly kisses the man. The world around them all but disappears, narrowed down to the feel of Mattheiu against him and the lightness in his chest at knowing now, for certain, that he'd be free to love his reaper with no restraint. Damn the rest of the world, he'd go to the ends of the Earth for Mattheiu.
He falls into the kiss, losing himself with the gentle affection until all that remains is his partner here beside him. His hand reaches up to bury in Lucifer’s hair while encouraging the kiss because for once he isn’t afraid to let down that final barrier and doubt, to fully accept someone into his life without regret. He wasn’t worried of failing as Lucifer would be there to catch him, he’s sure of it.
Pulling away slowly, Matthieu, thankfully, doesn’t allow himself to become a mess of feelings. “I couldn’t be more happy that you came,” he murmurs against the collar of Lucifer’s jacket.
"Well, now I wouldn't have missed it for the world," he answers softly, reaching up to bury a hand in Mattheiu's hair to gently soothe him. It's the truth, and there's such a sense of contentment as they sway together, the rest of the party forgotten. No one else mattered, after all, just his reaper in his arms and the shared affections between them.
"Next time maybe err on the side of caution when it comes to events such as this. They tend to make announcements of guests and their dates," Matthieu chides but it holds no real bite to it. He shifts his hand down to simply rest atop of Lucifer's shoulder while he glances down at their feet.
He sighs, "fancy footwork I suppose. I'll give you that."
"You love it, and you love me." He's grinning, cheshire, as he says it because it's true, isn't it? Mattheiu loves him. He loves his reaper back wholeheartedly, and it shows in the way he gently shushes the man, doing his best to drive all of his worries away.
"I could pull some strings, come in under the radar if you'd like. I know you aren't as fond of the spotlight."
He furrows his brow briefly at the encroaching pair that swirls nearer before vanishing off to the main throng that chokes the middle of the dance floor. Soon though he's glancing back towards that ridiculous grin and the bright eyes that draw him, stealing his focus away from all the distractions around them. A smile making a home on his face once more, "Yea, yea I do."
Matthieu shakes his head. "No it's fine really. Pretty sure everyone that did hear it thought it was a joke. But it's not what matters. I'm just being a pain because I can be."
"You're never a pain," he shakes his head, tutting under his breath as he gently chides, "and I'd much rather have a happy reaper than a dozen or so morons tripping over themselves to impress me. You're far more important."
It's the truth; for as much as Lucifer loves the limelight, he loves his reaper far more and there would be no question if Mattheiu ever asked him to step away.
"They quite literally trip over themselves sometimes," he agrees while still noting the effect that Lucifer had on those around him. A couple of the dancing pairs have stumbled over themselves when the draw catches them off guard and there's quite a bit of frustrated murmuring going on. "But I can be quite the pain. Part of the charm."
Matthieu may not be the more confident, let alone taller, between the two of them but he still manages to dip the devil. "The thing is though I don't care. You're a big deal so it's going to happen. But I'm safe in knowing that I can trust you with anything. Even a small thing as when knowing there's too much attention."
The dip brings forth a chuckle, and as Lucifer rights himself he leans in to press a kiss to Mattheiu's temple with a pleased hum. "And I trust you, darling. No matter how often there are those that try to vye for my affections they belong to one man and one man only. And that man happens to be a sharp dresser and a rather wonderful dancer if I do say so."
He's grinning against Mattheiu's skin now, he's on a roll, "a smooth talker, charismatic as anything, and oh that ass."
He's simply proud of himself for accomplishing the dip without making a fool out of himself or even worse making fools out of the both of them. The kiss isn't a reward as he gets them often enough but it certainly has that feel to it. Matthieu smiles, "You're really laying the compliments thick tonight. Pretty sure no one would argue with you cause well it's you saying it all."
Heat hits his cheeks and he presses one against Lucifer's shoulder while trying to fit the mild embarrassment. "Oh um I mean sure yea. You definitely enjoy that yup."
"My dear, I only speak the truth," his grin is wicked now as he chuckles under his breath, brushing his lips over the curve of Mattheiu's ear. "And the truth is that I enjoy so many things about you so very much.
Like your heart, the way that you're always there to listen. You passion, for your job, your music, your life. And yes, your ass, so lovely that I could write sonnets about it and never begin to express my appreciation of it."
“Oh I know,” Matthieu assures, tilting his head to the side so to raise a him. Such compliments were wonderful but he gets the nagging feeling that Lucifer is doing it for some reason. Perhaps to keep the reaper’s nerves down with all the sweet talk.
He waits for him to finish before nodding, “that’s quite the list you’ve got. Also might want to only want do some sonnets if you do. Do too many and it’s only because you like hearing your own voice and not the subject.”
"Ah, but your ass inspires such grandiose things," he smirks, leaning in close until he's able to just barely brush his lips over the shell of Mattheiu's ear. "And such naughty, naughty thoughts in me. I have to say, you look absolutely wonderful in these pants. I've been watching."
And just like that he's pulling back as if he hasn't just whispered filthy nothings into his reaper's ear. Instead he's flashing a charming smile at the man, eyes sparkling with mischief.
He chuckles under his breath, pressing close while Lucifer murmurs in his ear. Two can play that game. The music is slowly turning to something more upbeat so he chances a change in position. Twisting around, Matthieu presses his back to Lucifer’s chest while their arms adjust to rest against his stomach.
He gives a playful pushback with his hips, “I’m glad someone appreciates it so well. Giving it just the right attention.”
Oh now, that's certainly interesting. Interesting and perhaps playing a bit dirty if Lucifer is being honest, but he likes dirty and it's all he can do not to applaud his reaper's initiative as his fingers wind solidly into the man's belt loops.
"Oh darling, I'll give it as much attention as you want," he leans in again to murmur into Mattheiu's ear, giving a playful bump of his hips against his reaper's, "all you have to do is say the word."
If he wants a more memorable gala that eats the memory of before, then he’s going to loosen up more and enjoy the night. That might mean being a tad bit more ridiculous but the only opinion he cared for right now was Lucifer’s. Apparently he approved of the change in dancing position.
A low hum as he mulls it over. It fumbles into a soft laugh while he presses back into the bump. “I’ll take all the attention you’d give me,” he muses.
